What is Fair Trade?

People often ask: Why fair trade?

When Tumi started in 1978 the word fairtrade was not used in the same way as it is today. But there are organisations in the UK such as Tearcraft and later Tradecrafts and Tumi who developed the concept and tried to show others that you can make viable business in a capitalist society whilst being fair and just with the people who provide you with the income, often the artesans who live in developing countries.

We have just received a new shipment from Guatemala, so many of our popular fair trade items are back in stock, including wristbands and friendship bracelets, bandanas, mobile phone pouches and worry dolls.

These lovely cotton wristbands are woven by hand by women and children around Lake Atitlan whilst herding their animals.

This stylish pouch for storing your mobile phone is made by hand in Guatemala. It features a shoulder strap, velcro fastening and a mini front pocket.

According to legend, Guatemalan children tell one worry to each doll when they go to bed at night and place the dolls under their pillow. In the morning the dolls have taken their worries away. They make a lovely fair trade gift for children.

We have just had new shipment of Panama Hats from Ecuador. All our Panama Hats are fairly traded and hand made from natural "iraca" palm fibre. As well as looking stylish, they are lightweight and great for travelling, as they can be folded.
