What is Fair Trade?

People often ask: Why fair trade?

When Tumi started in 1978 the word fairtrade was not used in the same way as it is today. But there are organisations in the UK such as Tearcraft and later Tradecrafts and Tumi who developed the concept and tried to show others that you can make viable business in a capitalist society whilst being fair and just with the people who provide you with the income, often the artesans who live in developing countries.

Copal Incense

Copal is the resin from the trees of the Bursera genus which are considered sacred by the Maya Indians of Guatemala and Mexico. Just like myrrh and frankincense, it has an ancient history, having been burned since pre-Hispanic times, used as an offering to the gods. The ancient Maya believed they could see ancestors as well as gods in the abundant smoke produced. In the Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, copal was offered to the four directions and was considered an offering worthy of attention from the gods.

Today it continues to be used as an offering in small household shrines as well as the steps of many churches. It is also used in cleansing and purifying ceremonies. Modern studies have found that copal has properties that positively influence the immune response of the human body.

Copal can be burned in any incense burner as well as any of our ceramic circle of friends.

circle of friends - 4 figures circle of friends - 4 figures £9.95

Firstly you need to light a charcoal disc, then place this in the central dish of the circle of friends. Then just lay a small piece of copal on top of the red hot charcoal and your copal will start to smoke. We also sell a small ceramic brazier in a box set with copal and charcoal discs.
